Shepherd’s Way Farms sheep milk cheeses are handmade on the Read family farm, just outside Northfield, Minnesota. Each cheese is handcrafted using pure sheep milk to create our versatile yet unforgettable Shepherd’s Way Farms cheeses.
- From Grass to Sheep to Milk to Cheese
Shepherd’s Way Farms began crafting and marketing its own farmstead cheese, Friesago, in 1998.
- Friesago received enthusiastic endorsement from local Minnesota and Wisconsin food co-ops and other natural food stores and Twin Cities restaurants.
- Friesago earned accolades as a winner at the American Cheese Society Contest in 2002 and 2005.
- A second cheese, Shepherd’s Hope (Queso Fresco de Oveja), was test-marketed in 1999 and became available to select retailers in 2000.
- In 2005, Shepherd’s Hope, both original and garlic/herb, won prestigious awards at the American Cheese Society.
- In 2003, we added our recent award winning sheep milk blue, Big Woods Blue (named after our boys’ favorite neighboring State Park). Big Woods Blue was honored as top in its class at the 2004 American Cheese Society, and earned a blue ribbon in 2005.
